A young man in his 20s has reportedly died after allegedly swallowing 10 tramadol tablets at once during a competition with friends in Babile in the Upper West Region.
The incident, which has sparked widespread reactions on social media, reportedly happened during a challenge in which participants attempted to outdo each other by taking large quantities of the drug. It remains unclear what prize or motivation was attached to the alleged competition.
According to reports by Crime Check TV, the deceased, identified only as Kukura, was a native of Tugo in the Jirapa Municipality but lived in Babile in the Lawra Municipality.
He reportedly decided to swallow 10 tablets of tramadol after a friend allegedly consumed six tablets during the challenge.
Young man reportedly became weak shortly after taking tramadol
Witnesses said Kukura became weak almost immediately after taking the tablets and was rushed to the Babile Polyclinic for medical treatment.
However, he reportedly died shortly after arriving at the health facility.
The incident has reignited conversations around tramadol abuse among young people in Ghana, particularly in some communities where the opioid drug is increasingly being misused despite repeated warnings from health professionals and authorities.
