There was a moment during President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to the Ghana Grid Company Limited substation at Akosombo when the focus quietly shifted from damaged infrastructure to the people who helped bring it back to life.
Among them was a young woman on national service whose role in the recovery effort did not go unnoticed. In a move that has already sparked admiration, the President recommended her for automatic employment, citing her exceptional dedication during the crisis that followed the recent fire outbreak at the facility.
The gesture was more than symbolic. It signalled a recognition of the often overlooked contributions of young professionals in critical moments. For many observers, it also reinforced the importance of rewarding initiative and commitment, especially among Ghana’s national service personnel.
Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor added another layer to the appreciation. He revealed that MTN Ghana would be supporting the engineers with a donation worth one million Ghana cedis in airtime and data. The package, he explained, was a gesture of gratitude for their commitment and long hours spent ensuring that power was restored as quickly as possible.
The President did not reserve his praise for her alone. He commended the team of engineers who worked around the clock to restore power after the incident disrupted electricity supply to parts of the country. Their effort, he noted, was a testament to resilience and technical expertise under pressure.
The fire at the GRIDCo substation had raised concerns about the stability of the power system, but the swift response by engineers and technical staff helped avert a prolonged outage. Now, as operations stabilise, attention is turning to the individuals whose efforts made that possible.
For the national service person at the centre of the President’s commendation, the recommendation could mark the beginning of a promising career. For the engineers, the recognition serves as a reminder that their work, often done behind the scenes, does not go unnoticed.
