A total of 144 Ghanaian migrants have safely returned home from Libya under the International Organisation for Migration’s Voluntary Humanitarian Return Programme, with the Government of Ghana reaffirming its commitment to protecting citizens stranded abroad. The returnees arrived at Accra International Airport on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, where they received health screening, humanitarian support and the first steps towards reintegration.

Returnees Receive Immediate Support on Arrival
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the 144 returnees arrived in two batches, approximately 20 minutes apart, and were welcomed by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ghana Immigration Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Department of Social Welfare, the Ghana Health Service and other agencies involved in migrant protection.
The evacuation was coordinated by the Office of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in partnership with the Government of Ghana as part of the Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) Programme, which helps stranded migrants safely return to their home countries.
The returnees underwent immigration and medical screening before receiving food, psychosocial support and transportation assistance. Authorities said the returnees will also be enrolled in reintegration programmes designed to help them rebuild their lives through livelihood support, vocational skills training and other socio-economic assistance, based on individual assessments.
Why the Libya Evacuation Matters
The latest evacuation forms part of the longstanding partnership between Ghana and the IOM to facilitate safe, orderly and dignified returns for nationals stranded in conflict-affected and high-risk transit countries, particularly Libya.
The Government of Ghana thanked the IOM and its partners for their continued support in facilitating voluntary humanitarian returns and assisting returning migrants with their reintegration into society.
Officials also urged Ghanaians considering travelling abroad to use legal migration channels and avoid the dangers associated with irregular migration and human smuggling networks.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it will continue working with the IOM, Ghana’s diplomatic missions and relevant national institutions to provide consular support for citizens in distress and strengthen efforts to promote safe, orderly and regular migration.
