The High Court in Accra has dismissed an emergency application filed by lawyers for Ghanaian socialite Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, seeking to halt his extradition to the United States over alleged romance fraud charges. The latest ruling keeps the extradition process on course, although his legal team is continuing efforts to challenge the decision through the courts.

Abu Trica’s lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, disclosed the development in Facebook posts on Monday, July 6, 2026. He said the High Court had also brought forward the hearing of a separate motion seeking to stay his client’s extradition, with both parties directed to appear later this week.
The latest development comes just days after the High Court granted the extradition request.

High Court rejects emergency bid
According to Barker-Vormawor, the court initially indicated that both parties would appear on July 10. In a subsequent update, however, he stated that the hearing had been rescheduled to July 9.
He wrote:
“I just left court. The High Court has just made an order bringing forward the date for hearing of motion to Stay the extradition of Abu Trica. Both parties must appear on 09 July. We have also asked that we be granted access to our court asap.”
Before the latest ruling, Abu Trica’s lawyers had filed an emergency application asking the High Court to suspend all steps towards his extradition while they pursued an intended appeal and an application for leave to appeal.
Court documents showed the legal team sought five principal reliefs, including a stay of execution of the High Court’s July 2 judgment, which dismissed Abu Trica’s application for a writ of habeas corpus ad subjiciendum.
The lawyers also asked the court to suspend the enforcement of a committal order issued by the District Court.
In addition, they requested an order restraining the Minister for the Interior, the Attorney General, the Ghana Police Service acting through INTERPOL, and any other state agency from surrendering or transferring Kumi into the custody of the United States until all appeal processes had been concluded.

The ruling represents another legal setback for Abu Trica as Ghanaian authorities continue extradition proceedings linked to allegations that he was involved in a romance scam targeting victims in the United States.
Although the emergency application has been dismissed, the case is not yet over. His legal team is expected to argue the substantive motion seeking to stay the extradition at the upcoming hearing, which could determine whether the extradition process is temporarily suspended while further appeals are pursued.
The outcome will be closely watched because it could influence the timeline for Abu Trica’s possible transfer to the United States to face the allegations against him.
