Popular US-based Ghanaian broadcaster and social media commentator Kevin Taylor says he has no intention of distancing himself from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), insisting he will remain committed until he contributes to what he described as the party’s “total collapse”. Taylor, who said he grew up in Obuasi, a town widely regarded as an NPP stronghold, claimed he was once a loyal supporter and registered member of the party. Why Kevin Taylor Says He Lost Faith In The NPP
Taylor alleged that one of the NPP’s longstanding political strategies was convincing many supporters that they were intellectually superior because the party drew much of its support from the Akan ethnic group.
“For many years, the NPP’s strongest political weapon was convincing many of its supporters that they were intellectually superior to everyone else simply because the party drew the bulk of its support from the Akan ethnic group,” he wrote.
According to Taylor, anyone who questioned the party’s actions or decisions, regardless of their educational background or political affiliation, was often treated as an outcast. He argued that this culture of political and tribal loyalty discouraged independent thinking and fostered unnecessary divisions.
Reflecting on Ghana’s political history, Taylor claimed this mindset contributed to the disrespect shown to the late President John Evans Atta Mills despite his academic achievements and distinguished career.
The broadcaster said he remained loyal to the NPP even after relocating to the United States, believing many of the party’s actions were simply part of the rough nature of politics.
However, he claimed his views changed after attending an International Monetary Fund-related engagement in New York, where he said he spent time around then-President Nana Akufo-Addo, former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, Yaw Osafo-Maafo and Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.
Taylor alleged that conversations during the event appeared to focus more on money, per diem payments and food than on Ghana’s economic challenges. He said the experience fundamentally changed his perception of the party’s leadership and prompted him to question beliefs he had held for years.
The individuals mentioned in Taylor’s post had not publicly responded to his claims at the time of publication.
“I Will Never Leave”
Taylor said one reason critics struggle to dismiss him through ethnic attacks is that he is himself an Akan and comes from what he described as a royal family.
He ended his post by declaring that his mission was not simply to criticise the NPP but to remain part of the movement until it undergoes what he believes should be a complete transformation.
“I will never leave the party until I contribute to its total collapse and the reformation of a universally inclusive one with superior leadership, values and vision for Ghana,” Taylor wrote.
The post has since gone viral, attracting hundreds of comments across social media. While many users praised Taylor for openly sharing his experiences and challenging what he described as the party’s culture, others argued that the concerns he raised are not unique to the NPP but reflect broader challenges within Ghanaian politics.
