The First Vice Chairman of the Okaikwei Central constituency of the New Patriotic Party, Alhaji Harruna Rafik, is reportedly receiving treatment at the hospital after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of masked men over a dispute involving a woman believed to be another man’s girlfriend.
The incident is said to have occurred on Sunday, May 10, 2026, shortly after a constituency meeting attended by party executives and chaired by the Greater Accra Regional Secretary at the residence of Patrick Yaw Boamah.
How the alleged attack happened
According to Ghanaweb, Abubakar Osman, the Deputy Nasara Coordinator for Okaikwei Central, said party members had dispersed about 45 minutes after the meeting when the attackers suddenly confronted Alhaji Harruna Rafik on his way home.
According to Osman, the men arrived wearing masks and carrying weapons.
Speaking in a telephone interview with GhanaWeb reporter Amos Manteaw, popularly known as IGP, on May 12, 2026, Osman claimed the attackers accused the vice chairman of ignoring repeated warnings to stay away from a woman allegedly involved in the dispute.
“We were on our way when they approached him wearing masks and carrying weapons. I told them that we are all men and that whatever issue they had with him should be settled amicably, but they refused,” Osman stated.
He further alleged that the men claimed they had warned Rafik several times to stop pursuing the said woman.
“They said they had consistently warned him to stop following the said lady, but he refused to listen. They then slapped him and started beating him,” he added.
Victim allegedly denied knowing attackers
Osman also disclosed that after the assault, he questioned the constituency vice chairman about whether he knew the individuals behind the attack.
However, according to him, Rafik denied recognising any of the assailants.
“After the incident, I asked him whether he knew them, but he said he did not know them,” Osman revealed.
Petition over polling station elections
The assault reportedly happened after a meeting convened to address a petition submitted by Rafik concerning alleged irregularities in the constituency’s polling station elections.
Sources close to the matter say tensions within the constituency have recently been high following disagreements linked to the internal electoral processes.
Meanwhile, Alhaji Harruna Rafik is currently receiving treatment at Lapaz Community Hospital after sustaining injuries during the attack.
The matter has since been reported to the police for investigation.
