The Grand Arena in Accra turned into a celebration of Ghanaian music at its finest on Saturday night as the 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards honoured the industry’s brightest stars.

By the end of the glamorous ceremony, one name stood above the rest once again: Black Sherif.

The “Iron Boy” hitmaker reclaimed the coveted Artiste of the Year title, repeating his 2023 triumph and cementing his place as one of the most dominant forces in Ghanaian music today. Backed by an exceptional year on international streaming platforms and a run of chart-topping releases, Black Sherif walked away with five awards on the night.

His album Iron Boy won Album/EP of the Year, while his emotionally charged track Sacrifice earned him Songwriter of the Year and Best Afropop Song. He also grabbed the Best Hip-Hop Song award for Where Dem Boys.

Saturday’s ceremony, however, was far from a one-man show.

Medikal emerged as Black Sherif’s biggest challenger on the night, scooping four major awards. The rapper reclaimed the Best Hiplife/Hip-Hop Artiste title and dominated with his viral smash Shoulder, featuring Shatta Wale and Beeztrap Kotm.

The song won Most Popular Song of the Year, Best Hiplife Song, and Collaboration of the Year, drawing some of the loudest cheers from fans inside the packed auditorium.

Another standout performer was Kofi Kinaata, whose storytelling brilliance continued to earn industry recognition. His song It Is Finished won Best Highlife Song, while he was also crowned Best Highlife Artiste.

On the international front, Moliy enjoyed a breakthrough moment after her globally successful Shake It To The Max Remix secured Best Reggae/Dancehall Song and International Collaboration of the Year. The remix featured Jamaican stars Shenseea and Skillibeng.

The night also brought major wins for Wendy Shay, who was named Best Afrobeats/Afropop Artiste, while gospel star Diana Hamilton took home Best Gospel Artiste.

Veteran highlife icon Daddy Lumba received the Lifetime Achievement Award, drawing an emotional standing ovation from the audience.

One of the surprise moments of the night came when rising act Kojo Blak beat competition from other newcomers to win Best New Artiste.

Elsewhere, Stonebwoy successfully defended his dominance in the reggae and dancehall category by winning Best Reggae/Dancehall Artiste, while Strongman picked up Best Rap Performance for Mensei Da.

The 27th TGMA once again highlighted the growing global reach of Ghanaian music, with local stars increasingly making waves beyond the continent while continuing to command strong support at home.
