Multiple award-winning Ghanaian Dancehall musician Stonebwoy has described Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Croatia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a “strategic” loss, arguing that the result mattered little because the Black Stars had already secured a place in the Round of 32 before kick-off. The musician also suggested the outcome could pave the way for Thomas Partey to join the squad in the United States after reports that visa issues had delayed his arrival.

Speaking in a video circulating on social media, Stonebwoy said he had listened to football analysts before the game, who believed finishing third in the group could ultimately work in Ghana’s favour.
“Today’s game was a beautiful one. Before the match, I listened to sports analysts, and they said that if Ghana finished third, Thomas Partey, our giant midfielder, would be available to play in the next match in the United States, and that is perfect. It was a strategic move since we have already qualified for the Round of 32.”
Stonebwoy was referring to discussions surrounding Partey’s availability after reports that Canada had declined the midfielder’s visa application, preventing him from joining the squad earlier in the tournament.
His comments have since generated discussion among football fans, with some agreeing that qualification was always the priority, while others argued the Black Stars should never view defeat as acceptable on the World Cup stage.
Ghana Lose, But Knockout Place Was Already Secure
Ghana suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia on Saturday night at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia in their final Group L match.
The Black Stars entered the fixture already guaranteed a place in the Round of 32 after earlier results, including a victory over Panama and a draw against England, had secured enough points to progress.
Croatia, meanwhile, needed a positive result to keep their own World Cup hopes alive and started the brighter side.
Luka Modrić controlled proceedings from midfield before Petar Sučić fired Croatia ahead in the 31st minute after a neat exchange with Mateo Kovačić.
After the break, Ghana looked far more dangerous following the introduction of Abdul Fatawu and Ernest Nuamah.
Their pressure paid off in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen bundled home from close range. The assistant referee initially flagged for offside, but a VAR review overturned the decision and awarded the equaliser.

Focus Shifts To The Round Of 32
Croatia restored their lead ten minutes later when Nikola Vlašić powered home Luka Modrić’s corner to seal a 2-1 victory.
Although the defeat ended Ghana’s unbeaten run, it had no impact on the Black Stars’ progress to the knockout stage.
Attention now turns to the Round of 32, where Ghana will need greater attacking sharpness against stronger opposition after showing defensive discipline throughout the group stage.
For Stonebwoy, however, the bigger picture remains Ghana’s continued presence at the World Cup. Whether fans agree with his assessment or not, his “strategic loss” comment has added another talking point as the Black Stars prepare for the biggest match of their tournament so far.
