The robbery occurred on Friday, July 3, 2026, in the Greater Accra community of Lashibi, where the mobile money vendor was ambushed while driving home from work with a bag containing GH¢140,000.
The incident comes amid growing concern over violent attacks on mobile money operators, an issue that has repeatedly made headlines as criminals continue targeting vendors carrying large amounts of cash.

What happened during the Lashibi robbery?
According to a police statement signed by Accra Regional Police Public Affairs Head Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, preliminary investigations indicate that two armed men riding a motorbike intercepted the vendor as he drove home.
The suspects allegedly opened fire on the victim’s vehicle, damaging the right rear tyre and shattering the front windscreen before making away with the bag containing GH¢140,000.
Investigators say the robbers attempted to speed away immediately after the attack. However, the complainant reportedly fought back by firing at the fleeing men, killing one of them at the scene.
The surviving suspect abandoned the stolen bag while escaping, enabling officers to recover the entire GH¢140,000. The mobile money vendor escaped the attack without any injuries.
A search of the deceased led to the recovery of an AK-47 assault rifle, two magazines loaded with a combined 55 rounds of live ammunition, an additional 11 rounds of ammunition, GH¢3,000 in cash, a Samsung mobile phone and an identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu, aged 46.
Police also recovered five spent AK-47 shells and two spent pistol shells from the scene.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, autopsy and identification.
Meanwhile, the Accra Regional Police Command has intensified efforts to track down the second suspect, who remains on the run.
Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest police station or call the emergency numbers 18555 or 191.
As investigations continue, the incident is likely to add momentum to calls for stronger protection for mobile money vendors and other cash-based businesses that remain attractive targets for violent criminals.
