Ghana is celebrating a major international achievement after Edem Wosornu was appointed Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The appointment was announced on Monday, June 8, by António Guterres, placing the seasoned Ghanaian humanitarian leader among the top officials responsible for protecting millions of refugees and displaced persons around the world.
Wosornu will succeed Ruvendrini Menikdiwela, whose service to the global refugee cause was commended by both the UN Secretary-General and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Major Milestone for Ghana on the Global Stage
The appointment marks another significant moment for Ghana’s representation within the United Nations system.
Wosornu brings more than two decades of experience in humanitarian affairs, crisis response and international protection to the role. Her extensive track record in managing complex emergencies and coordinating global humanitarian operations has earned her recognition across the UN system.
She currently serves as Director of the Crisis Response Division at United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, a position she has held since 2023. In that role, she oversees global emergency operations and leads system-wide coordination during major humanitarian crises.
She also chairs the Inter-Agency Standing Committee Emergency Directors Group, a key body responsible for coordinating international responses to emergencies.
Extensive Experience Across Multiple Crisis Zones
Before assuming her current role, Wosornu held several senior leadership positions within OCHA at both headquarters and field levels.
Her previous appointments include Chief of the Response Support Branch in Geneva from 2021 to 2023, Head of Office in Nigeria between 2018 and 2020, Head of Office in Somalia from 2014 to 2015, Chief of the Strategic Planning, Evaluations and Guidance Section in New York from 2016 to 2018, and Chief of the Asia-Pacific Section between 2015 and 2016.
She also served as Deputy Head of Office in Somalia from 2012 to 2013.
Beyond these leadership positions, Wosornu has worked on humanitarian assignments in Darfur, Sudan, Pakistan following the devastating earthquake response efforts of 2004 and 2005, and Yemen. She also held legal protection roles with UNHCR in Sudan.
From UN Intern to Global Humanitarian Leader
Wosornu’s journey within the United Nations began as an intern at UNHCR, making her rise to one of the agency’s highest positions particularly remarkable.
Before joining the UN system, she worked in the private legal sector in the United Kingdom.
Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Hull, a Master of Laws in International Banking and Finance Law from University College London, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies from the College of Law in London.
In addition to speaking English and Fante, she has working knowledge of French and some Ewe.
Why the Appointment Matters
As Assistant High Commissioner for Protection, Wosornu will help shape policies and programmes aimed at safeguarding the rights and welfare of refugees, asylum seekers and displaced persons globally.
Her appointment comes at a time when forced displacement remains one of the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges, with millions of people affected by conflict, persecution and climate-related crises.
