Heavy rains that began late on Sunday, June 28, and continued into Monday morning, June 29, have caused widespread flooding across parts of Accra and the Greater Accra Region, submerging major roads, trapping residents in their homes and disrupting the morning commute. The flooding has affected several communities, including Afienya, where rescue teams have been deployed as authorities assess the full extent of the damage.

Floodwaters Swamp Major Roads Across Accra
The prolonged downpour left several major roads under water during Monday’s rush hour, causing severe traffic congestion and forcing many motorists to abandon flooded routes.
Residents and road users reported flooding along sections of the N1 Highway, Apenkwa towards Tesano, the Accra–Kasoa highway, Weija, Mallam, Achimota, Spintex, Atomic Junction in Madina, Tema, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction and parts of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.
Some homes and shops in low-lying communities were also inundated, prompting families and business owners to move their belongings to safer locations as water levels continued to rise.
Motorists have been advised to avoid driving through flooded roads, while residents in flood-prone areas are being urged to remain alert and move to higher ground where necessary.

Hundreds Reportedly Trapped in Afienya as Rescue Teams Respond
Among the hardest-hit communities is Afienya, where hundreds of residents are reportedly trapped following the overnight rains.
The immediate past Assembly Member for the Afienya Electoral Area, Habib Awudu Mohammed, described the situation as critical in an interview with JoyNews.
“It is true the whole area is flooded. Afienya itself, the town, the TOR Estate, Jerusalem, the Sanford Clinic, Ablekuma and other surrounding areas. The situation here is not easy; people are trapped in their rooms, they cannot move, they cannot do anything.”
He said officers from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana National Fire Service had arrived in the area and had begun rescue operations.
“Luckily, we got in touch with the NADMO rescue team; some of them are here, the Fire Service are here in their numbers, and we are doing our best to see how best we can rescue the people.”
According to him, Afienya has not witnessed flooding on this scale for about 16 years.
The floods have also caused heavy traffic along the Afienya–Tema road, making movement difficult for commuters and motorists travelling through the area.
Why the Flooding Matters
Monday’s flooding once again highlights Accra’s recurring struggle with heavy rainfall during the rainy season. Experts have consistently pointed to inadequate drainage infrastructure, indiscriminate waste disposal and rapid urbanisation as key factors contributing to the city’s persistent flooding challenges.
Emergency officials are expected to continue assessing affected communities throughout the day, while residents are being encouraged to follow safety advice and avoid flooded areas until water levels subside.
