Heavy rainfall across parts of the Greater Accra Region has caused flooding in several communities in Accra, leaving roads submerged, vehicles stranded, and commuters struggling to move through floodwaters as rains continue to intensify across Ghana’s capital.
Videos circulating on social media, eyewitness accounts and reports from local broadcasters showed severe flooding in parts of Accra following sustained rainfall over the past couple of weeks. The flooding once again raised concerns about poor drainage systems and the recurring impact of heavy rains on several communities across the capital.

Several residents shared videos showing muddy floodwaters overtaking roads, with some vehicles partially submerged while drivers attempted to navigate through difficult conditions.
In parts of Kaneshie, Atomic Road and Ofankor Barrier, floodwaters reportedly reached vehicle door levels, forcing some motorists to abandon routes entirely. Commuters were also seen wading through waterlogged streets as traffic built up across affected roads.
Traffic disruptions reported across major roads
The flooding reportedly made movement difficult along several major roads in Accra, with some commuters stranded for hours during peak travel periods.
Long traffic queues were observed in parts of Spintex Road, Madina, Mallam and Adentan as motorists attempted to avoid heavily flooded routes. In some areas, commercial drivers reportedly diverted journeys due to rising water levels.
Roadside businesses, kiosks and structures were also affected in certain communities as floodwaters spread into surrounding areas.
Motorists have been advised to avoid flooded roads where possible and remain cautious during periods of intense rainfall, especially in areas with submerged drains and poor visibility
Recurring flooding concerns in Accra
Communities such as Odawna, Alajo, Adabraka, Weija, Sakumono and Oyibi have repeatedly experienced flooding during Ghana’s rainy season, particularly after prolonged rainfall.
Residents and urban planning experts have often linked the persistent flooding to blocked drains, poor waste disposal, weak drainage infrastructure, illegal buildings on waterways and wetlands, and the rapid expansion of settlements in low-lying areas.
Flooding remains one of Accra’s most pressing urban challenges, with heavy rains frequently disrupting transportation, damaging property and affecting businesses during peak rainy months.
GMet warns of increased rainfall activity
The Ghana Meteorological Agency has in recent weeks warned of increased rainfall activity across southern Ghana as the rainy season intensifies.
The recurring floods have renewed public debate over sanitation enforcement, drainage maintenance and long-term urban planning in the capital.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) says it has activated its emergency response teams while monitoring the situation in affected communities.
Residents in flood-prone areas are being urged to stay alert, monitor weather updates and avoid walking or driving through fast-moving floodwaters.
