Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a senior communicator for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reportedly been arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at the Accra International Airport, according to party officials. What happened
Leading figures within the NPP confirmed the reported arrest, while the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, detailed the incident in a Facebook post.
According to Mr Kodua, EOCO officers, assisted by officials of the Ghana Immigration Service, arrested Mr Aboagye at the airport before taking him into custody.
He alleged that Mr Aboagye’s lawyers had been denied access to him and that his whereabouts had not been disclosed. He further claimed that no charges had been filed against the NPP communicator.
The reported arrest comes shortly after Mr Aboagye announced his intention to contest for the position of National Communications Officer of the NPP. He has also been one of the party’s most outspoken communicators, frequently commenting on national political issues.

NPP alleges political intimidation
In his statement, Mr Kodua described the incident as politically motivated rather than a legitimate law enforcement action.
“Let us be clear about what this is. It is not law enforcement. It is intimidation,” he wrote.
He argued that Mr Aboagye had consistently criticised the government, particularly on issues such as illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, and had questioned the administration’s performance.
Mr Kodua further called on EOCO to either release Mr Aboagye immediately or charge him before a court of competent jurisdiction if there were lawful grounds for his detention.
He also demanded that Mr Aboagye be granted unrestricted access to his lawyers and family, citing Article 14(2) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which guarantees the rights of persons in custody.
