President John Mahama believes Ghana’s Black Stars can become stronger if Carlos Queiroz remains in charge, backing continuity after the team’s progress at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz guided Ghana to the tournament, where the Black Stars reached the Round of 32 before being eliminated by Colombia. The team had earlier defeated Panama, held England to a goalless draw and lost to Croatia during their group-stage campaign.

Mahama believes Queiroz can build a stronger Black Stars
Despite criticism over Ghana’s performances, Mahama said the team exceeded expectations at the World Cup and showed determination on football’s biggest stage.
“The Black Stars performed admirably at the recent tournament despite many predictions that they would not progress beyond the group stage,” he said.
“They exceeded expectations by advancing to the Round of 32, demonstrating determination, resilience and the quality that exists within the team.”

Mahama’s comments come after renewed discussions about the future of the Black Stars following the team’s World Cup campaign and the debate over whether Queiroz should continue as coach.
The president’s backing follows earlier attention on Carlos Queiroz’s appointment as Black Stars coach, which marked another attempt by Ghana to bring stability to the national team’s technical setup.

Mahama believes keeping the current group of players together and continuing to support the technical team could help Ghana compete more strongly at future tournaments.
“If we maintain this group of players and continue supporting the technical team, I believe we can build a stronger national team capable of competing successfully in future AFCON and FIFA World Cup tournaments,” he added.
The Black Stars have experienced several coaching changes in recent years, making long-term planning and squad development a major talking point among football supporters.
Black Stars prepare for AFCON qualifiers
Ghana will now turn attention to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which begin in September.
The qualifiers will offer Queiroz another chance to test and improve the squad ahead of future tournaments.
