Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has backed the idea of keeping Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars coach despite Ghana’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with growing debate over the team’s future and leadership direction. The Sports Minister made the comments on Monday in an interview with Accra-based Joy FM, insisting that stability may be key to rebuilding the national team after what he described as a mixed campaign.

Minister pushes case for continuity despite World Cup exit
Kofi Adams said there is a growing view among Ghanaians that the Black Stars’ struggles are not solely down to coaching, but deeper structural issues within Ghana football.
According to him, maintaining consistency in the technical direction could help the team build a stronger foundation rather than starting over again after every major tournament setback.
He added that even though Ghana’s World Cup journey ended earlier than hoped, the team still showed signs of progress by advancing beyond the group stage.
Adams also stressed that reforms within the coaching structure of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) would take time, and frequent changes could slow down long-term development.
“If you listen to what a lot of Ghanaians are saying, they think the problem generally is not a coaching problem and that there are other things we have to address.
“My view is that there should be a certain level of consistency in the coaching,” Adams said.

Queiroz’s statement fuels confusion over his future
Speculation about Queiroz’s future intensified after a reflective social media post following Ghana’s World Cup exit, which many interpreted as a possible resignation.
However, the Sports Minister dismissed that interpretation, insisting no formal communication has been received regarding any resignation.
“He was not appointed on social media, so he will not resign via social media,” Adams said, suggesting that official processes must be followed.
He further noted that Queiroz is still believed to be under an active short-term contract, meaning any decision about his future must be handled formally by the relevant authorities.
The coach’s post, while emotional, did not explicitly state that he was stepping down, instead focusing on lessons learned and the need for stronger football structures beyond the pitch.
What happens next for Black Stars leadership
The Ministry says it is now awaiting a detailed technical report from Queiroz on Ghana’s World Cup campaign.
That report is expected to outline both on-field performance issues and off-field structural challenges, which officials say will guide future reforms.
Adams emphasised that Ghana football must now focus on consistency, better preparation systems and long-term planning if the Black Stars are to compete more effectively in future tournaments.
